A Victorian Gothic-themed French-made mantel clock. RR-41.

This impressive French-made mantel clock is presented in a "Belgique Noir" black marble case with colorful marble inserts.

The case is crafted from "Belgique Noir" black marble stone, now more commonly called Belgian midnight black slate. It features various colored stones, including green malachite and red and green marble, all polished to a smooth finish. The Gothic-style case resembles many Gothic entranceways found in churches and larger homes.

The case also features multiple malachite inlays, green and red marble highlights, shaped moldings, and inscribed Eastlake and Gothic designs. These details were originally highlighted with white paint but are now difficult to see. If you look closely, you will notice they cover many surfaces of the case.

The main body of the case has a porcelain dial with two distinct levels. The white porcelain contrasts sharply with the case color. The upper outer level features a time ring segmented with slashes at the minute positions. The hour numerals are Roman style. Two finely made Breguet-style steel hands display the time. The inner dial shows an exposed jeweled Brocot escapement. The dial is set behind heavy beveled glass and mounted in a French-sash brass bezel.

The Marti French-made movement is of high quality and was made circa 1850. It is spring-powered, designed to run for eight days on a wind, and strikes each hour on a coil-wire gong. (These photos were taken before the movement was serviced.)

The case measures approximately 21.5 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 8.5 inches deep.

Inventory number RR-41.
