A large English-made quarter striking Bracket or Table Clock. TT-209.
This is an exceptional Bracket clock. The case is finished in black lacquer and adorned with numerous applied brass castings. Their contrasts in colors command one's attention.
This case is elevated on four applied cast brass feet. They are decoratively formed and are of excellent quality. The front corners of the case feature canted corners that terminate at the bottom in a lamb's tongue molding. Substantial cast brass mounts are fitted on these surfaces. The front door is in an arched form and is cast in brass and fitted with beveled-edged glass. The cast spandrels positioned at the upper corners of the door in the frame of the case are designed with a cherub's head and wings. The sides of this cabinet have arched-shaped openings that are fitted with decorative cast brass castings. These are designed with radiants that disperse from a centrally located child's head. These castings are backed with a red material. The back door is fitted with a pierced brass screen. Here, the opening is a square shape. All three screens are designed to allow the notes from the bells to escape the interior of the case more easily. The notes are made when the hammers strike the bells on each of the quarter hours. Please also note the large brass carrying handles, which are mounted on the sides of the case. The top of this case features a caddy top. Four brass finials are positioned on each corner of the case. A fifth finial is located at the top of the case and is mounted on a plinth. Cast swags are pinned to the largest cove molding.
This fusee-powered "Victorian Chimer" is a three-train design. It is quarter striking and can be made to strike or not to strike. If you choose to set the clock up to strike, then you have the option of having it strike just the hours on a large coil gong or to strike the hours and the quarter hours. The quarter hours are struck on a nest of eight graduated bells mounted above the movement. A selector hand is located in the arch of the dial for these options. This large movement is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. All three trains feature fusee cones that equalize the power of the coil springs. This movement is of exceptional quality.
The dial is brass and is decorated with applied brass spandrels and silvered chapter rings. In the arch, one will note a silent/strike indicator, or a shut-off. It also features a selector for the two tune choices: Westminster chimes or Chime on Eight Bells.
This bracket clock case has the following dimensions. It is a full 29 inches in height to the top of the central finial. At the feet, this clock is 18.5 inches wide and 12 inches deep.
This clock was made circa 1890.
