A large English diameter dial clock with fusee movement. 225119.
As I get older, the benefits of a larger dial presentation become more helpful. This 15-inch-diameter dial is unusually large for this very popular clock form, which typically measures 11-12 inches. This wall clock form is extremely popular in the United Kingdom. Hugh numbers were made over a period of 160 years. The latter production was used extensively in public buildings, including railroad stations, offices, schools, and pubs.
The back of the case is constructed of oak and provides a protective cover for the clockworks. The case is fitted with access doors on both sides and at the bottom. The front of the case features a shaped walnut bezel measuring 22 inches across. It is secured to the back structure with four wooden dowels. The front of the bezel features a modern finish, highlighting its natural light caramel color. The heavy cast brass dial bezel is fitted with glass and opens to access the flat-painted iron dial.
This dial measures approximately 15 inches in diameter across the time ring. This is considerably larger than the standard-size examples, with dials measuring 11-12 inches in diameter. Here, the hours are displayed in bold Roman-style figures. The minute divisions are boxed, and triangles mark the five-minute markers. The steel hands display the time.
The movement is of excellent quality. It is heavily constructed in brass. Four-shouldered brass pillars support the plates. Steel shafts support the brass gearing and recoil escapement. This movement is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is a time-only design, powered by a large coil steel spring housed in a brass canister. A fusee cone is used to equalize its power. Power transfer is via a steel chain, original to this clock. The pendulum hangs from the back of the movement, and the bob is brass-faced.
The substantial example measures 22 inches across and 7 inches deep.
