Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. Model Number 5.5 Hanging Belgrade with black dials. This is the 30-day, time-only version. 225038.
This is an exceptional representation of Ithaca's Belgrade No. 5.5 calendar wall clock. In my view, it is the most visually appealing version, with black dials adorned with gold graphics, all housed in an ash case. The case is adorned with a variety of Eastlake carvings and applied moldings, some of which are highlighted in black, creating a striking contrast.
Both 7-inch-diameter black paper dial displays are protected behind the glass door. The dials are decorated with gilt graphics. This color combination adds an air of sophistication. The upper dial, the time dial, features gilt Roman-style numerals positioned inside a closed minute track. Both of the trim rings or sashes are brass. The time is displayed with brass Maltese-shaped hour and minute hands.
The lower dial displays the calendar information. The day of the month is located along the dial's perimeter. A long, narrow hand mounted in the center points to the appropriate date. The perpetual calendar mechanism in this clock is located behind the lower dial. It automatically adjusts for variations in the length of each month and leap year. The day of the week and month of the year are shown on separate roller displays through rectangular-shaped windows in the center of this dial. The rollers are original to this clock and are in excellent condition. The company trademark and information are also located on this lower dial.
The 30-day E. N. Welch brass movement is a time-only design. Two springs are required to provide the power for the extended runtime. One of the benefits of an extended-running clock is that it can be mounted high on the wall, since winding access is required only 12 times a year. Movement access is provided through a removable panel at the back of the case. This model features a single-piece backboard.
The wooden pendulum, an original feature of this clock, swings below the time dial but in front of the calendar dial. This artfully designed pendulum is a unique and authentic part of this historical timepiece, sure to pique the interest of any collector.
This fine wall clock measures approximately 37 inches tall and 14 inches wide.
This example was made circa 1885.
