This fine Federal Massachusetts Timepiece form is commonly known as a "Banjo Clock." This example is signed on the dial "Foster S. Campos / PEMBROKE*MASS." It features its clockmaker's stamps, which include the pinetree on the dial, the banjo stamp on the backboard, and the date and production number on the lower glue blocks. This clock is numbered 21 and was made circa 1982.

This exotic wood's rich, medium-brown coloring contrasts beautifully with the applied yellow brass decorations. An eagle finial adorns the top of the case. This cast brass eagle finial is well made and exhibits good definition in its feathers. The brass dial bezel is fitted with convex glass. It opens to a painted zinc dial featuring Roman-style hour numerals, a closed minute circle, the trademark “pinetree,” and the Maker's name. Shapely brass sidearms are mounted to the side of the throat section. The flat mahogany frames are cross-banded with rosewood. These frames support hand-painted tablets that retain their original decoration and excellent colors. These glasses were painted by Tom Moberg and are signed on the back of the lower glass. The throat tablet features traditional themes, including gilt borders and red and blue coloring. “PATENT” is painted in the banner. The lower tablet is decorated with colors that match the panel in the throat section. This lower panel depicts a WAR of 1812 naval engagement. An American eagle is painted in the center of the scene. It is depicted with its wings outstretched, and an American shield is below it. The stripes of this shield are not decorated; as a result, the brass-faced pendulum bobbing and swinging behind the glass will flash through this design. The bird, with its powerful talons, is clutching arrows and holy branches. This is an excellent tablet demonstrating a high level of skill. The colors and detail are well defined. These tablets are better than most.

The brass weight-driven movement of this clock is a testament to exceptional craftsmanship. It is mounted with a machined screw from the back and is designed to run for eight days. The front plate is die-stamped “FOSTER CAMPOSS / PEMBROKE / MASS.”

This impressive clock measures approximately 35 inches in length, making it a substantial and eye-catching addition to any collection or space.
