A fine Sevres-style French 8-day striking ormolu mantel clock made circa 1860. 223225.

This distinctive mantel clock form was popular in France during the Louis XVI revival period (1860-1890).

This wonderful sculptural clock is cast in bronze and remains in excellent condition. The case retains most of its original fire-gilded finish, giving it a soft, warm gold tone. Highly finished areas reflect light in the room. Some elements flash as one's perspective changes.

Besides the gold-colored case, this clock features several Sevres-style decorated porcelain panels. Each panel is framed in cobalt blue. The themed decorations are skillfully hand-painted and framed by rich raised gold vermeil detailing. The five lower panels fitted into the base molding feature floral themes. The center panel shows a lovely courting scene with the family dog and a bonnet full of berries. The dial is complex. Roman-style hour numerals are positioned in separate cartouches. Centered are two playful cherubs, a basket of flowers, and several musical instruments. Pierced brass hands indicate the time.

The clock case is elevated on four cast brass feet fitted under the complex base. This base is three-dimensional, featuring blocks, curved surfaces, and shaped moldings. Five inset porcelain panels are prominently featured. A console-form pediment sits above the base, featuring a courtship panel. Additional details surround it, including various moldings and fluted columns. This section supports the clock's dial. Above this is a cast oval-shaped urn topped with a flame. Ribbons of garland, acanthus leaves, and hooped handles decorate the case's sides. These details provide a three-dimensional presentation.

The French Japy Frees time-and-strike movement is powered by two springs: one for the 8-day time train and one for the strike train. The clock strikes the hours on a bell inside the case. It is excellent quality.

Dimensions: The case is 17 inches tall. It is 16.25 inches wide and 6.25 inches deep.
