A fine French figural gilded bronze shelf clock, depicting King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain, circa 1820. XXSL-85.

This wonderful sculptural clock is cast in bronze and remains in excellent condition because it retains its original protective glass dome. A variety of household environments were kept away from the surfaces of the clock case. This glass dome fits tightly on its finely inlaid and ebonized wooden base. This not only protects the case from dust but also discourages handling . As a result, the clock has a fine color. Both components appear to be original accessories to this fine clock.

This bronze case retains most of its original fire gilding. The treatment presents the case in two contrasting tones: subdued and gilt gold. The highly finished gilt highlights reflect light in the room. Some elements flash as the perspective changes.

The clock case rests on a detailed Rococo base with scrolled feet and an elaborate apron. The figural form depicts a 15th-16th century nobleman posed in a peaceful allegory. He has his hands off his sword hilt and has set aside the articles of war and office. Below is an elaborate scrolled frieze with a bust of a female noblewoman at its center, likely King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. A console-form pediment rests on top and houses the movement and dial.

The French time-and-strike movement is fitted with a silk suspension supporting a pendulum. It is powered by two springs: one for the 8-day time train and one for the strike train. The clock strikes the individual hours on a bell inside the case. It is in excellent running condition.

The enamel dial features Roman-style hour numerals. Breguet-style hands display the time.
