This is the Chelsea Clock Company's smallest Desk Set model, with dials that measure 2.75 inches in diameter. Standing 5.25 inches tall, 7.25 inches wide, and 2.25 inches deep, this cute clock and barometer combination would be a standout addition to any desk setting.
This clock set is in excellent condition. The rose-colored brass case has been expertly polished and lacquered, maintaining its warm color. The screwed-on bezels are fitted with beveled glass. The eight-day time-only movement and the barometer mechanism have been recently serviced. The 8-day movement featured in this model is Chelsea's high-grade auto movement. It winds and sets from the back. The back cover unscrews to provide access. This particular example was ordered and retailed by the well-known Portland, Oregon retailer "A. & C. FELDENHEIMER, INC / PORTLAND, ORE." The plain dial, paired with engraved graphics filled with paint that contrasts beautifully with the silver finish, reflects the refined aesthetic favored in the early 20th century. The serial number 169564 is stamped on the movement, which dates the set to approximately 1925—a period when Chelsea Clock Company was renowned for its precision engineering and its clocks were sought after by both maritime and luxury clientele. A. & C. Feldenheimer, Inc. was an upscale jewelry, watch, and silver retailer operating in Portland, Oregon, from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. It was founded by Albert Feldenheimer in about 1885. His brother Charles joined the business in 1899, and the name changed to reflect that. A. & C. Feldenheimer, Inc retailed high-end goods, including luxury timepieces (such as custom Patek Philippe watches) and patented souvenir spoons manufactured by prominent silversmiths like Gorham and Durgin. The business closed in 1936.
The Chelsea Clock Company Board of Directors met for the first time on July 28, 1897. The Board consisted of Whipple N. Potter, Jr., President, Charles H. Pearson, Treasurer, Reginald Foster, Clerk and Secretary. Allen L. Shepherd served on the Board with the elected officers. This first group of individuals was not together long. The Chelsea firm persevered and has enjoyed a long run of success as a result of making clocks of superior manufacture. This company made many clocks. Some of which were in the style of the Willard timepiece or banjo clock, the E. Howard Model No., 70 and more famously, marine clocks. This company remains in business today.
