Chauncey Boardman of Bristol, CT. A wooden geared Painted case tall clock. JJ-25.
This is a decorative wooden works tall clock made by Chauncey Boardman of Bristol, Connecticut. The movement's construction is typical of what one would expect from this clockmaker. The wooden geared movement is a time-and-strike design of standard quality. The plates are oak. The movement is weight-powered and runs 30 hours on a full wind. It strikes each hour on a bell mounted above the mechanism. It also features subsidiary seconds on the dial, shown by a seconds hand.
The case, crafted from pine, has been expertly repainted in a traditional smoky yellow finish that enhances its period character. The paintwork remains immaculate, highlighting the clock’s preserved quality. The case rests on elegantly shaped cutout bracket feet, lending it a refined stance. Its waist is long and narrow, featuring a simple yet graceful rectangular door. The bonnet is distinguished by a classic swan’s-neck pediment. Notably, it lacks a door; the bonnet must be removed to access the hands—a detail in keeping with early 19th-century craftsmanship. The arched opening is glazed, allowing a clear view of the dial. Fully turned, free-standing and painted bonnet columns frame the bonnet opening, adding visual interest. The arched wooden dial is beautifully decorated with floral motifs and gilt spandrels, while the arch displays a painted scene of a large, center-chimney-style house. Dating to circa 1815, the clock stands an impressive 7 feet tall. Its compact proportions and elegant form make it a particularly attractive example of period case design.
