Ansonia Clock Company, New York. The “RECLUSE” in apple green with Visible escapement. 225015.

This porcelain case clock was made by the Ansonia Clock Company of Brooklyn, New York, circa 1894. The model is called “Recluse,” and this example is in apple green.

This decorative clock is in good original condition. Festive coloring is applied over a white background, with shades of green, yellow, and pink. Gilt highlights were added after firing and remain in excellent condition with little wear. The French Rococo-style sash or bezel is fitted with beveled glass, allowing a view of the enamel five-inch dial.

The dial features Arabic-style hour numerals around the time ring and has minor damage near the time-side winding arbor. The maker’s name and company location are printed along the lower rim. The center is sunk to provide space for the visible escapement, which offers a view of the working movement. The clockmaker’s trademark is also on this inner level.

The eight-day brass movement strikes the hour and half-hour on a gong mounted inside the case. The movement is die-stamped on the back plate by the manufacturer.

This clock was made circa 1901. At that time, the catalog price was $13.50.

This case stands approximately 11 inches tall, 12.25 inches wide, and 5.25 inches deep.

Inventory number 225015.
