The Welch, Spring & Co., was formed in 1868. This company was form with the goal of producing a better quality clock than it’s parent label, E. N. Welch. It incorporated better woods in the construction of the cases and a higher level of detail work. As a result, Welch & Spring Clocks were more expensively priced.

Elisha Niles Welch was on February 7, 1809. He Had many ventures in clock related businesses over his life time. He was the first President of the Bristol Brass and Clock Co. in 1850. He absorbed many clock businesses over a relatively short period of time. In 1864 He formed them into the E. N. Welch Mfg. Co, Some of those acquisitions include the Manross clock business in Forestville, J.C. Brown, John Birge, Frederick Otis, and Irenus Atkins. Welch was also a world traveler and a lover of the arts and music. He often invited guest to his house and provided them with entertainment. This particular model is called the “Patti V. P.” It was named after the prodigy vocalist, “Adelina Patti.” Aldelina was a soprano prima donna. She is described as a beautiful woman who was wealthy, liberated and a nonconformist. She was very popular with men.

This example is in excellent overall condition. The case is constructed in rosewood and features applied turned columns and details. The front of the case features a large arched door. The glass is decorated from the back with a reverse painted gilt design which is original to this clock and is in very good condition. The movement is a “Patti” design made pre 1884. It is brass and will run eight days on a full winding striking the hour on a wire gong. The pendulum is quite fancy. It is decorated with a colorful red glass insert. The motion of which can be viewed through the door. Hence the “V. P.“ part of the model name, visible pendulum. On the back of this case, one will find the Clockmaker’s label. It is in very good condition. This clock was made circa 1880. Dimensions are as follows: 18.5 inches high, 12 inches wide, 6.25 inches deep.
